FUTA Suspends MBBS Admission for 2026/2027 Academic Session

The Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA) has officially announced that it will not admit students into its Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) programme for the 2026/2027 academic session.

This decision comes as a surprise to many aspiring medical students across Nigeria who had listed FUTA as their preferred choice during the ongoing 2026 UTME registration.

What FUTA Said

In a statement signed by the university’s Registrar, C.O. Adeleye, FUTA notified the public that all categories of candidates,  including UTME and Direct Entry applicants, will not be offered admission into the MBBS programme for this upcoming session.

Prospective candidates who had already selected FUTA as their choice institution for medicine during the ongoing JAMB UTME registration have been strongly advised to immediately consider alternative universities that still offer MBBS admissions for 2026/2027.

Why This Matters To Candidates

All future MBBS aspirants who included FUTA as their first choice are directly affected.

Admission suspension applies to both UTME and Direct Entry routes. There’s no guarantee FUTA will admit MBBS students next session unless future announcements change this status.

At the time of the initial announcement, FUTA did not publicly state the reason behind the suspension.

However, follow-up statements from the university have suggested that internal academic calendar coordination and clinical training arrangements are among factors being reviewed, pointing to efforts to ensure quality training for currently enrolled students.

What Students Should Do Next?

If you are affected by this development, here’s a clear plan of action:

  1. Log into your JAMB portal and check your current choice of institution.
  2. Replace FUTA with another university offering MBBS while the UTME registration window is still open.
  3. Prioritize universities with active accreditation and robust clinical partnerships.
  4. Stay updated via official school portals or JAMB announcements, misinformation can spread fast.

Ending Paragraphs

FUTA’s temporary halt on MBBS admissions underscores the importance of staying flexible and informed as a student navigating Nigeria’s competitive medical education landscape.

If you had your heart set on FUTA’s College of Medicine, don’t despair, just be strategic about securing admission elsewhere this session.
