Summary Of The Life Changer | CHAPTER ONE
A family of six awaits the arrival of Mr. Esquire. As they wait, Bint recounts her encounter in the classroom with her inquisitive social studies teacher, Mallam Salihu, who is known for pretending to know a little bit more about any topic and often asking off-topic questions.
Bint recounts how she truly coped with a similar event, leaving the teacher stunned by the cheers and laughter of other students.
Utterly proud of her daughter, especially Bint’s shrewd approach to problems, Ummi joins the discussion just before Omar joyfully announces his acceptance to study law at Ahmadu Bello University.
As the family gathers to celebrate Omar’s success, Omar brags about his achievement and prides himself on having uniquely overcome the challenges of the exam and various other admissions processes as he seeks admission.
Acknowledging her son’s naivety, Ummi tries to enlighten him about the life-changing power of getting admitted to the university. Ummi explained to her children how her admission changed her.
Summary of The Life Changer | CHAPTER TWO
Twenty years ago, Ummi was admitted to the university and married her husband before she even started her school registration. Ummi tells of the freedom and carelessness of the students at the university, the difficulty in distinguishing between professors and students with females dressing almost naked, and the fact that some faculties have to comply with dress codes. Ummi further reveals her experiences with Salma, a cultured young woman.
Salma will check in for registration much better than others, but expresses discomfort and irritation at the delay in registrations. Salma is questioned by a young man in the queue who constantly gets her into a fight, but Salma continues to criticize and generalize her views on lecturers.
Salma not only creates a resemblance between the lecturers and the police officers as bribery figures but also boasts of her ability to obtain favor with the lecturer if he gives him as little as two or three thousand Naira. Unbeknownst to Salma and to the amazement of everyone in the queue, the young man she spoke to is the announcer in charge of the registration process.
Ummi continues with her department search and is referred to the HOD office. The HOD exchanges endearing banter with Ummi, which she finds quite awkward and inappropriate. Ummi assumes the HOD is trying to outsmart her. She manages to accommodate this indefinitely until receiving her matriculation number and storming out of the office, irritated and angry.
Once home, Ummi tells her husband about her experience at the HOD office but was shocked to learn of the friendship and relationship between her husband and Dr. Sam John.
CHAPTER THREE SUMMARY
Ummi tells the story of “the still one”, a boy named Talle. He was given birth after so many years of futility, though his mother died during the process of his birth. He grows up quiet and becomes even more reserved with the deaths of his father and stepmother, so “quiet one” was a perfect description for him.
Talle is considered a good person by the villagers and incapable of harm. However, Talle eventually needed money and confided in Zaki, who suggested the idea of kidnapping a child for ransom. The plan was carried out by the duo and Talle keeps the boy at his house.
Talle goes to the market to buy his groceries, but his usual food order doubles. Soon, the market woman notices a change in his large grocery order and reports the problem to the district manager. While Talle is being interrogated by the district head, police break into the palace and arrest Talle on suspicion of kidnapping and extortion. Talle and Zaki are eventually sentenced to a few years in prison.
CHAPTER FOUR SUMMARY

Unfortunately, Dr. Debo catches up with his long-standing discipline and approaches Salma. Salma arrogantly rebuffs his attempt and continues to insult him before leaving the office. Dabo is left in a state of regret, ruefully praying for justification for the shock of what he has created.
Salma completes her hostile registration and moves into a room occupied by three other girls. Initially, Salma doesn’t like seeing her roommates, but eventually, they start to like each other and form an intimacy they see as a sisterhood.
On a faithful evening, two men, Habib and his driver Labaran, offer Salma a ride in a Mercedes Benz. She slips into it, knowing it’s dangerous, and smugly hatches a plan to turn down Habib’s request to date him if he finally proposes.
Having to turn down a man who drives a Benz is Salma’s way of raising her standards and gaining recognition and respect from her peers and the entire university.
