Summary Of The Life Changer | CHAPTER ONE

A family of six awaits the arrival of Mr. Esquire. As they wait, Bint recounts her encounter in the classroom with her inquisitive social studies teacher, Mallam Salihu, who is known for pretending to know a little bit more about any topic and often asking off-topic questions.

Bint recounts how she truly coped with a similar event, leaving the teacher stunned by the cheers and laughter of other students.

Utterly proud of her daughter, especially Bint’s shrewd approach to problems, Ummi joins the discussion just before Omar joyfully announces his acceptance to study law at Ahmadu Bello University.

As the family gathers to celebrate Omar’s success, Omar brags about his achievement and prides himself on having uniquely overcome the challenges of the exam and various other admissions processes as he seeks admission.

Acknowledging her son’s naivety, Ummi tries to enlighten him about the life-changing power of getting admitted to the university. Ummi explained to her children how her admission changed her.

Summary of The Life Changer | CHAPTER TWO

Twenty years ago, Ummi was admitted to the university and married her husband before she even started her school registration. Ummi tells of the freedom and carelessness of the students at the university, the difficulty in distinguishing between professors and students with females dressing almost naked, and the fact that some faculties have to comply with dress codes. Ummi further reveals her experiences with Salma, a cultured young woman.

Salma will check in for registration much better than others, but expresses discomfort and irritation at the delay in registrations. Salma is questioned by a young man in the queue who constantly gets her into a fight, but Salma continues to criticize and generalize her views on lecturers.

Salma not only creates a resemblance between the lecturers and the police officers as bribery figures but also boasts of her ability to obtain favor with the lecturer if he gives him as little as two or three thousand Naira. Unbeknownst to Salma and to the amazement of everyone in the queue, the young man she spoke to is the announcer in charge of the registration process.

Ummi continues with her department search and is referred to the HOD office. The HOD exchanges endearing banter with Ummi, which she finds quite awkward and inappropriate. Ummi assumes the HOD is trying to outsmart her. She manages to accommodate this indefinitely until receiving her matriculation number and storming out of the office, irritated and angry.

Once home, Ummi tells her husband about her experience at the HOD office but was shocked to learn of the friendship and relationship between her husband and Dr. Sam John.

Ummi tells the story of “the still one”, a boy named Talle. He was given birth after so many years of futility, though his mother died during the process of his birth. He grows up quiet and becomes even more reserved with the deaths of his father and stepmother, so “quiet one” was a perfect description for him.

Talle is considered a good person by the villagers and incapable of harm. However, Talle eventually needed money and confided in Zaki, who suggested the idea of kidnapping a child for ransom. The plan was carried out by the duo and Talle keeps the boy at his house.

Talle goes to the market to buy his groceries, but his usual food order doubles. Soon, the market woman notices a change in his large grocery order and reports the problem to the district manager. While Talle is being interrogated by the district head, police break into the palace and arrest Talle on suspicion of kidnapping and extortion. Talle and Zaki are eventually sentenced to a few years in prison.

This chapter gives another account of the splendor and swagger of Salma. Salma goes to Dr Debo, the level coordinator, to get the forms signed. Unfortunately, Dr. Debo catches up with his long-standing discipline and approaches Salma. Salma arrogantly rebuffs his attempt and continues to insult him before leaving the office. Dabo is left in a state of regret, ruefully praying for justification for the shock of what he has created.

Salma completes her hostile registration and moves into a room occupied by three other girls. Initially, Salma doesn’t like seeing her roommates, but eventually, they start to like each other and form an intimacy they see as a sisterhood.

On a faithful evening, two men, Habib and his driver Labaran, offer Salma a ride in a Mercedes Benz. She slips into it, knowing it’s dangerous, and smugly hatches a plan to turn down Habib’s request to date him if he finally proposes.

Having to turn down a man who drives a Benz is Salma’s way of raising her standards and gaining recognition and respect from her peers and the entire university.

In this chapter, it is discovered that Salma gives Habib Tomiwa’s cell phone number instead without Habib’s knowledge, and he calls Tomiwa to take her on a date. Tomiwa becomes curious about Habib and decides to go on a blind date, but ends up revealing the cellphone connections change. Habib still likes it and shops for her and her roommates. He also gives Tomiwa some money for her and her roommates.

She is thrilled and her roommates share this happiness. At first, Salma protests against Tomiwa’s approval of Habib, accusing her of being a chameleon. Ada and Ngozi intervene, but the problem escalates. They quickly fall into a state of calm when they hear a knock on the door. They don’t want to have to share what’s going on with other neighbors.

Meanwhile, Salma and her roommates continue to do excellent jobs in their respective departments and prepare for general study assignments.

Salma finds moral philosophy very difficult. However, she prepares by practicing past questions and answering them immediately. Unfortunately, Salma can’t answer any of the questions during the exam because none of the topics she’s been preparing for all night came up.

She decides to indulge in bad exam practice. Kola provides answers to some of the questions in a note and she takes them to copy them into her answer booklet. Unfortunately, she gets caught by a female supervisor.

Salma is forced to fill out the Examination Malpractice Form (EMAL) and is taken to the HOD office. Salma and Kola were dismissed afterward.

Salma goes to Habib to help her influence the committee using his position as a politician. Habib offers to intimate Dr. Debo, but due to her past experiences with the man, she rejects this suggestion and offers bribes. Habib offers to give Salma a certain amount of money to bribe the head of the Exam and Ethics Committee (EMEC), but in exchange, she has to pay it back in kind.

Salma reluctantly accepts this offer because of her affair with Labaran and feels it is unfair to have an affair with her friend’s husband. Salma soon accedes to his request, but unfortunately gives the money to Dr. Kabir, who claims to be the head of EMEC. She soon discovers that she was being lied to by Dr. Kabir, who was neither the head nor a member of the committee. She was demoralized.

This chapter reveals the true identity of Mohammed Kabir, a laboratory technologist employed at the university with the nickname Doctor since high school, he was always called Dr. Kabir.

Labaran finds out that Salma was tricked by the gamblers and informs Habib and suggests contacting Zaki to sort out the situation. The Honorable Habib is skeptical about involving Zaki as he failed in the first mission to kidnap Alhaji Adamu’s son. Habib gives in to Labaran’s suggestion and contacts Zaki to follow Kabir.

Kabir is seen at a gambling plaza. Kabir wins the game at the casino and leaves not to lose everything. Unfortunately, he is being pursued by thugs whose mission is to take back Kabir’s victories. Zaki catches up with Kabir as the thugs attack him. Zaki beats up the thugs and takes control of the situation as they escape. He then focuses on Kabir, collecting the money and leaving him injured.

Ummi also informs her children how Salma changed her immoral ways. Salma becomes serious and decent after her father’s death and due to her seriousness, Ummi allows Salma to become a friend her.

Ummi also reveals Salim’s upset experience with smartphones. Salim told Lawal about a girl he met on social media. After several exchanges of photos, conversations, and affection, Salim visits Natasha according to her preference. Not realizing that Natasha is cheating on him, he embarks on a nocturnal trip to see her.

Upon his arrival, she joins him in the front seat of his truck, and Salim is struck by her beauty. Eventually, he is ambushed by gunmen trying to steal his belongings. Luckily for him, he escapes this only to hook up with another woman he met on social media.

This time he asks Lawal to come with him to avoid a similar eventuality. Lawal refuses and goes to the supposedly beautiful girl. Salim leaves disappointed and meets an ugly girl. The children show their admiration for all the stories Ummi tells them as they wait for their father to arrive.
